Only one more week until we’re term! Holy shit. No really, holy shit. I am so unprepared. I’m starting to have anxiety about everything labor and delivery related. From making it to the hospital in time to being able to handle an unmedicated birth again. We’re doing our birth prep refresher this weekend, which will hopefully help alleviate a few of my concerns. Obviously I know no one is forcing me to go unmedicated, but it’s important to me for our little Sprout and myself.
Weight Gain to Date: Ok I know I try not to be all body snarky on myself especially since I’m growing a precious baby, but gah, I’m starting to get puffy again. With these sweltering temperatures it shouldn’t be a surprise that I’m retaining some water and well, I have gained 25 lbs. That’s another 3.5 lbs in the last two weeks. I seem to have a knack for gaining at rapid pace in the last 6 weeks or so of pregnancy. Not really something I like to be an overachiever on.
Belly Button in or out: Oddly enough, it’s been an innie a lot this week. I think it’s just the ever changing position of Sprout and the fact that he keeps getting lower and lower.
Baby Size: Sprout is likely about 5-6 lbs now and about 18-20 inches long. At my 34.5 week appointment the midwife estimated 4-5 lbs. I asked if he was going to be significantly larger than Ella and she said likely larger, because most second babies are, but significantly would be a stretch. My guess is that if we get to 40 weeks, he’ll be around 7.5 lbs.
New Developments: Sprout’s skin is getting smooth and soft, his gums are rigid, his liver and kidneys are in working order, and his circulation and immune system are basically good to go. His lungs are the only organs that still need to fully mature, but every day he gets a little closer to the point at which he’d be able to breathe on his own if he were born.
Cravings: This varies by day. I’d been resisting the craving for a maple glazed donut, but this week, the smell of them as I opened the case to get Ella’s kid’s cookie while we were grocery shopping was too much. I gave in and it was delicious.
Food aversions: No aversions to report. There was a horrendous mystery smell in the lunch room this week that had me on the verge of gagging and left me with no desire to eat my lunch.
Feeling: This is the first week I actually felt uncomfortable. Monday night I told Josh, as I rolled myself into bed, that I felt huge, achy all over and exhausted. The rest of the week I felt better, though I’m having some fairly consistent back pain, lower abdominal cramps and heartburn/reflux. Sounds pretty awesome right? The cramps aren’t painful and I’ve scheduled a massage for this weekend to take care of that back pain. The heartburn and reflux, I’ve been told apple or milkshakes may help. I’ve tried apples which did nothing. So I think I’m going to have to try the milkshakes.
Sleep: I’ve been sleeping like a rock once I fall asleep. There are not enough hours in the day dedicated to sleep and that is a real problem for me. I think Josh is sick of hearing me tell him I’m tired. I’m absolutely loving my body pillow.
Movement: I’ll just show you:
Maternity Clothes: Oh you know, they rock my world. I can still wear non-maternity workout clothes, but everything else is maternity.
Exercise: I’ve been slacking in the past two weeks, only going to the gym or walking on our home treadmill a handful of times. I had a few nice swimming sessions which feel so good. I’m just so damn tired by the end of the day that by the time I put Ella down (this is quite the battle now) and it’s nearing 9 pm, my motivation isn’t there. At least I’ve been making sure I get in at least 10k steps every day. If time and weather permits, I take a 30-45 minute during my work day to get the blood flowing. Plus it is so nice to get out and see the sunshine.
Name: I have narrowed my list down to three names. Josh has not committed, but I can tell he has a front-runner because it’s the most used name when he talks to Sprout. It was the one name that was on both of our lists originally, but unfortunately I’m not digging it as much as I had been.
Signs of Labor: I add this subject this week because I had my first pregnancy related restriction handed down. I was supposed to travel to a conference in the mountains this week. Thinking that it would probably be best to double check that the midwives had no qualms about me going up there for a few days, I asked at my last appointment. Much to my surprise they said no. Due to the fact that I had bad contractions my first night in Breckenridge several weeks back, my history of earlier delivery, fast labor and signs of dilation, combined with the fact that the nearest hospital would be over an hour away, they said it was not a good idea. So we’ll see if this baby decides to come early like his sister.
