Our Weekend Away

We have never spent a night away from Anderson together. We once, two years ago, spent a single night away from Ella. We stayed in the same city and were away for less than 24 hours. Last year when Josh was asked to be a groomsman in a friend’s wedding out East, we decided it was time for our first trip without the kids. It’s expensive to fly the entire family anywhere, especially with Anderson turning two next month. Plus, we needed a weekend free from parenting.

I was so excited but nervous about leaving the kids. My mom was generous enough to offer to fly out to stay with them for us. We bought her ticket and lined up our plans for the wedding. I started prepping the kids a few weeks out about our trip. Ella was totally fine, which I knew she would be. I was nervous about Anderson. He’s still (I know STILL) nursing three times/day and I had no idea how he would do without me at bedtimes. I spent way too long writing my mom notes about any nuances I could think of. I made a fresh loaf of bread and grocery shopped to make sure they had plenty of food.

When the day actually came, we said goodbye to the kids before putting them down for their naps. Even on the way to the airport, I was slightly freaking out. Not that my mom wasn’t capable, but we’d just never left the state without them. By the time we’d checked in and ordered our first drink and antipasta platter, I was relaxed.

We kept saying that it was so strange to not be making a dozen trips to the restroom, sitting in the play area and worrying about keeping kids entertained. To be honest, after a few drinks I had a buzz going. Our friends Ryan and Claire had just, basically that day, moved to Providence. They were amazing enough to pick us up at midnight. The next morning we were off for New Hampshire.

It took a bit longer than we expected, a little more than three hours of driving through the beautiful, lush trees.

We arrived at the Bishop Farm B&B which was so cute and situated in the White Mountains. Absolutely gorgeous.

It was almost like being in college again. Ryan and Claire were in the room across from ours. We ate together, drank too much together and walked from all the wedding festivities together. Claire and I even picked ticks off of each other after getting more than a dozen between us during our afternoon stroll.

The wedding was something straight off of Pinterest. Jess looked beautiful and Paul was beaming as he watched his bride walk down the aisle. They had a bluegrass band and tasty food in the barn.

The next morning we drove back to Rhode Island, making a stop for Josh to enjoy his first lobster roll and me to hug a lobster. Plus a quick stop in Boston for some treats from Mike’s Pastry. Sadly our quick trip was all but over after enjoying a really delicious Italian dinner.

I don’t know why we waited so long to take a weekend away. The kids did amazing with my mom. She had them out and about all over the Twin Cities. When we got home, they ran to us for big hugs and kisses. I thought Anderson would wean while we were gone, but nope, the first thing he did was take my hand and ask to go night night aka, give me milk.

We celebrated our return home with some s’mores after dinner and a well deserved glass of wine for Nana.

Sarah and Jason Tie the Knot

Last weekend I had the honor of standing up for my girlfriend Sarah as she married her soul mate Jason. Sarah and I have been friends since our freshman year of high school. We did swim team together, went to awesome concerts like Christina Aguliera together and there were many a night that we stopped at Burger King to get onion rings on our way home from whatever it was we did back at 17.

Sarah is the most unique spirit I’ve ever known. Always true to herself, she have the aura of joy and true sense of all things around her. She’s so unique in this way that I thought it impossible that another person like her could exist. Until she met Jason. I remember her telling us about him for the first time and I thought, wow, could it be that Sarah found someone as appreciative of life in general and has the same overwhelming positive light coming from them? Sure enough, he does.

So it was a joy to be in their wedding this weekend. It was a bonus that my oldest Colorado friend, Lisa, whose beautiful wedding both Sarah and I were in last September, came to stay with us for the weekend! The three of us have now all been in each other’s weddings. So fun! It was so much fun having a grown up sleep over at my house.

Lisa and I stopped at Nordstroms to have our make-up done which was a great call on Lisa’s part. As soon as we were done we headed to Boulder where we spent the early afternoon getting all  done up at the St. Julien.

How beautiful was the view from the suite?

Once ready we all piled into a big SUV limo to pick up the boys and head to the farm where the ceremony and reception would take place.

The ceremony was beautiful…and hot. We all had sweat dripping down out legs. Sarah and Jason wrote their own vows which we beautiful, heartfelt and put into words only the two of them could string together.

The rest of the evening was spent mingling, enjoying fresh, delicious, organic food from the very farm we were at and neighboring farms.

Everything was cooked outside on the huge grill and wood burning stove. We enjoyed each other’s company as we listened to a local bluegrass band.

It was so very Sarah and Jason. I told Josh that we will never be to another wedding like it.

Congratulations again to my dear friend Sarah and her new husband Jason!

First Road Trip

We embarked on our first road trip with Ella this weekend.  We packed up the family and headed to Lincoln for a wedding.  We timed it so we left right after Ella ate.

She did so well! She slept for about 3.5 hours until we got to Ogallala to eat dinner.  She slept until we got to Grand Island and then the rest of the way to Lincoln.  The rest of the morning wasn’t so great, but hey, it was a nice car ride.

Friday Josh’s sister Amber brought her daughters to Lincoln for a visit.  Ella got to meet Ximena who is 10 days younger and her cousins Hanila and Maya.

Amber and I with our new babies.

A little change from the last time we saw eachother.  Josh’s grandmother also came over for dinner.  They had made blankets at her nursing home earlier in the day and she was really excited to give one to her new great granddaughter.

Saturday we went to Josh’s friend Brent’s wedding.  It was fun to get together with all of his high school friends. Ella was the belle of the ball and a complete angel.  She was great during the ceremony and slept through the first several hours of the reception.  Even when she was awake she was in a great mood, loving being held by everyone.  Of course I failed to take an pictures. That night I was treated to a 4.5 hour stretch of sleep. It was amazing!

Sunday morning we packed up the car and headed home.  She was great on this trip as well. Pumping in the car is so helpful!  Otherwise I don’t think I’d be able to get through a 7 hour drive with her sleeping for so long.  She also treated me to a 5 hour stretch of sleep last night. Yeay!  I think she’s starting to understand nighttime is for sleeping.

Jilly Bean Gets Married

My friend Jill, affectionately referred to as Jilly Bean got married last night in Golden.  In college we had lots of fun times including treking through the city after a HUGE blizzard our freshman year where we found a shoe that lived in Jill’s car until we moved out, going through pledging Kappa Delta, Vegas, several crazy nights out and so many more.  She also is responsible for teaching me how to burp, a very valuable skill. 🙂

Here are a few shots from the night.

I was a little nervous about how Ella would do since feeding time and the ceremony conincided.  Luckily she did great all night!

Congratulations again Jill and Laith!

We had a bunch of our friends stop by to see us today and do lunch. At lunch we found out that Jason and Jennell are expecting! They are so excited they couldn’t keep it a secret. She’s do in April. Congratulations to them!

Nice day for a White Wedding

I’m so behind because it’s already been two week since my friend Kirsten married the man of her dreams, Brandon. Yeay! I really do love weddings, especially when I’ve gotten to watch the couple grow in love. Awe.

They got married up in Morrison which was a beautiful setting and Kirsten looked absolutely beautiful.

After the ceremony and dinner it was time for cake from my favorite bakery in the Denver area, Das Meyer. That’s where we got our wedding cake too!

Of course then it was time for dancing. I even did a little Cupid Shuffle and got convinced to join a conga line.

We had quite the Kappa Delta reunion at the wedding. It’s amazing how grown up we all are. Time flies when you’re having fun!

As much fun as I was having, there was no way I was going to make it to the after party.

Especially since I had to work the following day.

Kirsten and Brandon are now enjoying a honeymoon in  Paris and Italy. I wish I could go in their suitcase just to be back in both places. Congratulations Kirsten and Brandon!

P.S. Happy Birthday to my not so little, little brother Tom who turns 24 today!
